Does oil helps growing hair? Destroy common beauty myths

There are many things I hate about living alone and becoming an adult, like paying bills, making doctor’s appointments. And by far the worst part is oiling your hair yourself. I miss those long mushroom sessions with my mom as we sat and watched endless amounts of television. There was something so calming, relaxing and stress-relieving about these sessions that it made my worries always seem distant.

We all know that hair oil can be enjoyable after a long day. But does it really help hair growth? To understand this better, we contacted Dr. Chytra Anand, famous cosmetic dermatologist, Indian beauty guru and founder, Kosmoderma Clinics who debunked many myths about hair oil for us.

Does oiling your hair really help with hair growth?

“Oiling the hair doesn’t help hair growth, but oiling the scalp helps nourish the hair roots. It is important to remember that the hair itself is nothing but protein, and that it is dead, but only the root is a living structure that needs nourishment when the oil is applied. , the lipids in the oil form a layer that strengthens the hair, ”says Dr Anand.

What are the benefits of hair oil?

Hair oil nourishes the scalp and strengthens the hair. The massage itself is very useful for stimulating blood and lymphatic circulation. The nutrients in the oil penetrate and help the hair roots, making them stronger and more hydrated. It also helps relieve stress and works great for calming the nerves.

Are there any drawbacks to oiling the hair?

Dr. Chytra explains that when done correctly, there is nothing wrong with oiling your hair. However, you should avoid it if you have an oily scalp, seborrheic dermatitis, or ongoing scalp infections such as psoriasis.

What is the right way to oil your hair?

If you want to get the maximum benefits from hair oil, you need to do it right. The first thing to note is that you need to apply it while it is hot because it increases absorption. Then start by dividing the hair on your scalp into one-and-a-half inch sections and apply the oil using your fingertips or a cotton ball directly to the scalp and massage it into the scalp. After even application, gently massage the scalp with your fingers for 5-10 minutes. It increases circulation to the scalp and is relaxing at the same time. Then, run your greasy hands over the hair, but don’t apply the oil directly to the tips of the hair, only the roots. After the massage, apply a warm towel to increase the penetration of the oil into the scalp.

How often should you oil your hair?

“The frequency depends on the type of scalp. For dry scalp, apply once a week for 30-60 minutes and for oily scalp, once every 3 weeks for 30 minutes, “explains the dermatologist.

People tend to grease their hair and then shampoo two or three times to get rid of the product. Is it counterproductive?

Dr. Anand further explains that a critical point to note with hair oiling is that you need to apply the oil to your scalp. Do not apply the oil directly to the ends of the hair as it is of no value and can only end up stripping the hair more. Using a suitable hair oil after shampooing or using shikakai will help remove the oil from your hair. Typically, you will need two washes followed by a conditioning phase.
