7 expert tips to give yourself facial at home in the best possible way
Facials are one of the most relaxing and luxurious things you can do on your own. At this time, many of us need to take care of ourselves and de-stress more than ever, but it is not possible to book an appointment with your favorite beauty expert for a professional beauty session. Fortunately, you can still have a spa-quality facial at home.
“You can do this once a week at home,” says Ling Chan, founder of Ling Skincare and Spa, adding that now is the perfect time to try to recreate your favorite facial steps. Although we now have a lot of time at home, the face should be seen as a treatment, not a daily fact.
We spoke to the experts and assembled a selection of products for facial at home that go beyond your usual skincare routine:
1- Create a relaxing atmosphere.
If you can’t go to the spa, you can bring the spa to you by creating a relaxing atmosphere at home. This may seem like a small step, but removing as much tension as possible to relax will make your face and get facial at home.
Lorencin recommends bathing with Epsom salt. If you’re not in the mood for a full-body bath, you can immerse your feet in the same de-stressing sensation. It is very healthy for all pressure points in the foot and is very comfortable, says Chan.
For optimal relaxation, Chan and Lorencin recommend adding a few drops of lavender essential oil (but you can use whatever essential oil works for you). Be sure to light some of your favorite candles and put together a relaxing playlist of your choice.
2- Clean your skin well.
Before doing anything else on your face, you should start with a clean cloth. Leaving any makeup or product on the skin will reduce the effectiveness of the face. To make sure your skin is as clean as possible before starting the facial at home cleansing process, try double cleansing.
“Clean first with a greasy cleaner, but the second clean should be more of a degreasing type of cleaner,” Lorencin says. An oil-based cleanser will remove makeup, products, and sebum, while a water-based cleanser removes dirt such as dirt or sweat, leaving skin clean and ready for next steps.
3- Steam your skin.
If you are a fan of the face, you know that most facial steps will include some type of steaming process. Chan explains that moisturizing your face helps open your pores and smooth the top layer of your skin, preparing it for peeling.
If you want to steam your face at home, be careful not to steam your skin as this can lead to dryness. According to Ling, there are two ways you can (safely!) Try to steam your face. You can move your face over a bowl of hot water and cover your head with a towel to catch the steam, or soak a towel in hot water and place it on your face, making sure the water is not hot enough to burn you. 4- Exfoliate to soften and lighten the skin.
Any good homemade facial kit(or face in general, for that purpose) includes exfoliation to get rid of dead skin cells and show off a radiant complexion. Both Chan and Lorencin recommend using a chemical or enzymatic scrub instead of a physical scrub (like a scrub). Scrubs “leave small tears on the face. Micro tears are small scratches”, they can cause breakouts and lead to pimples.
However, exfoliating with the use of peeling creates the perfect canvas for the rest of your face with a facial at home. Chan explains that exfoliation helps open pores and smooth skin texture. She recommends massaging your skin with a chemical or enzymatic scrub, targeting problem areas like the T-zone that may be oilier or have clogged pores.
5- Massage in a mask.
The face will not be fine without some type of face pack. You can choose which mask you want to use based on your skin’s needs, but Chan recommends looking for a mask with detoxifying ingredients to help clean your pores, as it will open them up after exfoliating (think a mud mask or a charcoal mask).
To make your facial at home experience like a spa, try massaging your mask for a few minutes instead of just quickly smoothing it out. “If the mask is a bit thick, wet your fingers with warm water, or if you really want to give it a fancy touch, with some warm green tea,” Lorencin says. Then massage the mask onto your skin. This will greatly improve the appearance of your glowing skin. “
Leave the face pack on for 15 to 20 minutes. “If it’s possible (and I think it’s really possible these days), sit in the tub or warm bath and let this mask flow gently over your face,” Lorencin says.
6- Moisturize the skin.
One of the most important factors in achieving a radiant glow is to thoroughly moisturize your skin with a highly rated moisturizer. Once the mask is removed, lock in moisture with your favorite serum or moisturizer. 7- Skip the extractions.
Of course, extractions can be one of the most flattering parts of the face. But this is a step you should leave to the professionals. “I wouldn’t recommend it,” says Chan. “If it’s not clean, it can get infected if it is only thrown in half. Trying to do your own self-extraction and catch your face is never a good idea. Also, our experts recommend leaving professional microneedles to avoid scars and infections.
