Pregnancy is one of the best moments in a woman’s life when life is being created within her. At this time, both mother and baby can be very sensitive to certain products, so every mother about to give birth has a long list of do’s and don’ts.
While most of it includes food and exercise, skincare plays an important role here, too. There are quite a few beauty products that should be banned as well as potentially unsafe during pregnancy and for your baby.
Retinol and Retinoids
Retinol and retinoids are often used to treat acne and are known to cause some serious birth defects. It’s best to avoid over-the-counter products like anti-aging serums, as they are known to contain trace amounts of these ingredients.
Essential Oils
This is very shocking! While they are known to be a natural alternative to many beauty products, they are available in different concentration levels. Many of them are known to cause some health problems in pregnant women, so it is better to stay away from them. If you want to continue using them, talk to your doctor first.
Salicylic Acid
One form of BHA, high-dose salicylic acid, known for its anti-inflammatory properties, can be dangerous for babies and fetuses.
Over-the-counter products are generally considered safe because they contain relatively low doses of BHA, making them safe to use. Oral medications containing only high doses should be avoided during pregnancy.
Formaldehyde
Doctors often advise pregnant women to limit their exposure to products such as nail polish and hair products that contain formaldehyde. This component has been linked to fertility problems. While it’s important to stay well-organized, if you’re headed to a nail or hair appointment, it’s best to talk to your doctor and stylist before indulging in it.
